Two Afghan short films with English subtitles were shown, produced by Roya Film House, which was established in 2003 by two young Afghan sisters, Roya Sadat and Alka Sadat.
Roya Sadat was born in Herat, Afghanistan in 1981, at the time of the Russian war. She was the first woman director in the history of Afghan cinema in the post-Taliban era, and ventured into making feature films and documentaries on the theme of injustice and restrictions imposed on women. She studied law and political science at the University of Herat and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005. In 2006, she studied at the Asian Film Academy, Busan, South Korea for a Certificate Course in Film Direction.
Alka Sadat was born in 1988 in Herat, Afghanistan. She studied cinema in Italy. In 2013 she coordinated in holding the first Afghanistan International Women’s Film Festival.
When Roya and Alka were very young, at the time the Taliban ruled in Afghanistan, women’s education was a taboo. Then Roya, Alka and their other four sisters were educated at home by their mother.
Up to now, Roya and Alka Sadat have produced many documentary films focused on women’s issues in Afghanistan and received several awards at many international film festivals.
