Female grads reveal the worst things they’ve been asked at job interviews

Discrimination is alive and well…

“Do you plan on having children soon?” is just one of the sexist (and illegal) questions that women are often asked when applying for a job.

Employment law firm Thomas Mansfield asked graduates from more than 20 universities what the worst thing they’ve ever been asked at an interview is. Here’s what they came up with.

WHAT?!

If you, like us, are yelling “BUT IT’S 2015!” into your screen right now, then we have *some* goodNEWS for you.

You are under no obligation to answer these questions, and by asking them, employers are actuallybreaking the law.

If you are asked about any of the following things, then this could beCONSIDERED discrimination, and you don’t have to respond:

  • Your health (unless this is likely to affect your ability to meet the demands of the job)
  • Whether you have children, or are planning to
  • Your relationship status
  • Your age
  • Any spent criminal conviction (unless the job is covered by special rules, e.g. a school teacher)

Discrimination in recruitment isn’t just a problem faced by graduates. A shocking number of women have shared their stories of sexist interviewing with the Everyday Sexism Project.

Sigh.
