Τι υπάρχει σε ένα έθνος; Ένας ευρύς ορισμός του έθνους είναι μια κοινότητα ανθρώπων που ορίζεται με βάση κάποια κοινά χαρακτηριστικά όπως η γλώσσα, η ιστορία, η εθνικότητα, η κουλτούρα και/ή η κοινωνία. Στο όνομα του ενός και ομοιογενούς έθνους, τα κράτη έχουν καταπιέσει εθνοτικές ομάδες με διαφορετική γλώσσα ή θρησκεία, εμφύλιοι πόλεμοι έχουν ξεσπάσει και σύνορα έχουν παραβιαστεί για να διεκδικηθούν τα εδάφη των “άλλων”, που υποτίθεται ότι αποτελούν απειλή για το κράτος. Μέχρι και σήμερα, οι μειονότητες βλέπουν τα δικαιώματα τους να καταπατώνται, τη γλώσσα και τη θρησκεία τους να δαιμονοποιούνται, την ελευθερία της έκφρασης να καταργείται και τα εδάφη τους να κατάσχονται. Ακόμα και οι ακτιβιστές που πολεμούν για τα δικαιώματα των μειονοτήτων διώκονται και απειλούνται. Προκειμένου να αποδομηθεί η αφήγηση του “ομοιογενούς” έθνους και της κυριαρχίας του κράτους, το BCK παρουσιάζει μια συλλογή ντοκιμαντέρ που αναδεικνύουν τα θέματα που αντιμετώπιζαν οι μειονότητες στο παρελθόν και τα ζητήματα που βιώνουν σήμερα, εν το μέσω ενός νέου κύματος ανερχόμενου φασισμού, εθνικισμού και αποικισμού.

What’s in a nation? A broad definition of a nation is a community of people formed on the basis of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity, culture and/or society. In the name of the one and homogenous nation, states have oppressed ethnic groups with a different religion or language, civil wars have erupted and borders have been breached to claim the territories of “others”. Until the present day, minorities have their rights violated, language and religion demonized, freedom of expression banned and lands confiscated. In order to deconstruct the states’ narrative of the “homogenous nation”, BCK presents a selection of documentary films that address the issues that minorities faced in the past and experience in the present, in the midst of a new wave of growing fascism, nationalism and colonialism.
