Mexican Senator Ana Gabriela Guevara Beaten for Being a Woman

The Olympic superstar posted a shocking photo of herself on Twitter looking bruised after having surgery on her face.

Mexican Olympic superstar and senator, Ana Gabriela Guevara, was brutally beaten by four men on Sunday in what she has described as hate crime targeting her for being a woman and a motorcyclist, she said.

Ana Gabriela was riding her motorcycle on Sunday evening when a car hit her and caused her to fall. She was unhurt and went after the car trying to make the driver take responsibility for the damage to her motorcycle, but then four men in the car got out and beat her with blows to the ribs and head.

News of the attack went public Monday when the senator posted a photo of herself on Twitter looking bruised after having surgery on her face.

“I appreciate the attention of everyone who has been concerned about my health. I have left the operating room well to recuperate from surgery.”

The Olympic medal-winning athlete-turned-politician delivered a press conference Tuesday at the Senate in Mexico City in which she condemned the “cowardly and vile” crime, calling authorities to take action on addressing violence against women, which is a major problem in Mexico.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office said Wednesday that the attackers have been identified. The office also announced that authorities are looking into the demand presented by the 39-year-old senator for the leftist Workers Party, as well as witness statements.

But despite the seriousness of this crime against a woman, thousands of internet users have been mocking the unfortunate events by questioning the gender and femininity of Ana Gabriela, the first Mexican female track athlete to win a gold medal in a major international competition.

“There have been all kinds of insults, men and women who have expressed they agree with the fact that I was beaten,” Ana Gabriela said on Wednesday in an interview with CNN. “Of course I have also received support and love from thousands of people.”

This is not the first time that Ana Gabriela has been a victim of attacks for her physical appearance, which some consider “too masculine.” As a high-performance athlete, she has suffered humiliating “femininity controls” conducted by the International Olympic Committee in order to verify her gender.

Ana Gabriela has promised to strengthen discussions on gender violence within the Senate in order to highlight and tackle the problem that exists in Mexico.
