The Kenyan women’s and human rights defender was murdered on Monday, January 3, 2022 in Isiolo, Kenya. The murder of Elizabeth Ibrahim Ekaru highlights the widespread nature of violence against women human rights defenders in Kenya.
Her murder, which allegedly took place while she was defending land rights, is a true testament to the risks, challenges and attacks that women human rights defenders continue to face in the course of their work, fighting for social, environmental, economic, cultural and political rights enshrined in the 2010 Kenyan Constitution.
