Guatemala: The number of deaths rises to 40 – People demand the resignation of the President

Around 200 people walked the streets of Guatemala reading the names and ages of the deceased girls until they reached Plaza de la Constitución, where more manifestants were waiting, for a total of 3.000

To the date, there are 10 minors in critical state at two hospitals  and another 5 are in middle care.

Authorities of the Roosevelt hospital informed that 2 little girls passed away this Saturday due to the gravity of the burns that the disaster of Wednesday caused.

The whole nation is shocked up by the the tragedy and accuse the government authorities of the abandonment of the social institutions like Safe House.

After the deaths, Morales confirmed that the children were locked up at a classroom when the fire started, Meanwhile, the Social Wealth Secretary, Carlos Antonio Rodas, presented his resignation to the charge and can not leave the country by an order of the District Attorney.

Plus, magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), that are also members of the Civil Chamber, gathered with delegates of the Social Wealth Secretary, Peace judges and representatives of several sectors of the society and public institutions, to establish judicial measures in relation with the children that are still hosted at the shelter.

To the date, there are still 72 children that have not been relocated in other temporal centers.

The population assures that this is a State crime, but even though the leader recognizes the responsibility of the authorities in the tragedy, he denies this possibility. The people demand Morales to resign to his charge.

Outraged Guatemalan people take the Central Square

Outraged by the growing number of deaths in the Seguro Virgen de la Asunción House, that climbed to 39 this Saturday, Guatemalan people went to the streets to protest and to demand justice and punishment towards the those responsible of the tragedy.

Children, teenagers, adults and elders, at the same time, raised their voice and launched clear  instructions to the president Jimmy Morales, demanding the resignation of all the decision-makers in the care of childhood.

College students also joined the manifestations at the Cultural National Palace, with the same premise, jail to the officials.
Messages of criticism towards the General Procuracy of the Nation, the Social Wealth Secretary and to the president, were the highlights of the citizen manifestations that will keep on until the state is functional again and guarantees the life of Guatemalan people.

“They did not deserve to die like that”, pointed out the sign that the students of the Center American Normal Institute (INCA) carried, who also joined, along some teachers, to demand a quick, transparent and fair investigation.

Some of the assistants, clear in their petitions, justified their indignation on the inoperancy of a system that in 2015 began to show the children situation in the Seguro Virgen de la Asunción House.

This Saturday protests were a new homage to the victims of the tragedy, homages that since Thursday have been taking place in front of the Presidential House and of the Cultural National Palace.

Protesters have lined up a path of candles, messages, victims names and flowers towards the National Palace.
