Open letter to Alexis Tsipras, the new prime minister of Greece
The feminist organisations of Spain who sigh this statement, wish to express our solidarity with Greece and our wish to restore human rights. Here in Spain, the so called austerity and stability measures imposed by our government and the European Union, have condemned to unemployment 5,5 million people, that is 22,8% of men and 24,7% of women. They have also increased inequalities, mistrust to the political institutions. On the other hand, they have caused the broad social mobilisation of which we are a part.
Feminism demands equality between women and men, this is why it is in conflict with the neoliberalism which rules 80% of the population on the planet today, so as the 8% of eople owns 82% of wealth and wants even more. According to the General Secretary of the United Nations, in 2014, this is incompatible with the universality of human rights. This is why we are glad that the new government of Greece will break the policies of austerity and cuts, will lead to economic recovery and the creation of employment positions, to the restructuring of the debt, the rule of transparency and will wage war against corruption, tax evasion and clientellism.
But in Greece, apart from the social inequalities, there is also gender inequality. According to Eurostat, 31,4% of Greek women are unemployed, while the percentage of men’s unemploymet is 24,5%. Also, the danger of poverty for the women is 36,8% while for men it is 34,6%.
For all the above, we express our great disappointment because you have created the most male dominated government of Europe, wich, in the best of cases, will practice an enlightened autocratism, of the kind “everything for the women, without the women”, and it certainly does not represent the percentage of women of Greek society, neither does it embody the democratic principle: power stems from the people.
Restore this, mr. Tsipras, and take also into consideration the women of your country, observe the value and the abilities of those who can be your ministers, and do not contempt the support of those who fight for the women’s rights together with the women.
